The man who helped create an independent nation of South Korea once lived in a house at 100 E. Lincoln Street that skirts Media and Upper Providence, writes Susan L. Serbin for Delco News Network.

Philip Jaisohn (1864-1951) moved to the Jaisohn Memorial House in 1925, practicing medicine and raising a family there.

He remained dedicated to Korean independence, sometimes traveling back to South Korea. When the first presidential election in Korea was confirmed by the United Nations, Jaisohn was asked to run. He declined.

Last week, Korean organizations gathered with local officials at a groundbreaking at the home for an addition that will house archives, educational programs and meeting spaces.

Upper Providence architect Bob Linn is designing the addition, which will increase exhibit rooms from four to eight.  A small parking lot will be built at the Gayley Street entrance.

Media Mayor Bob McMahon, who has championed the project, recalled a visit to the home by South Korean President Kim Dai-jung.

“I remember tin 1999 when your president was here,” said McMahon. “What a thrill that was. Media has been partners with you all along. Now we want to teach the next generation.”
