Jack Stollsteimer, the first Democrat to be elected to the district attorney’s post in Delaware County, is getting ready to start his historic term in January, writes Vinny Vella for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

In the November election, Stollsteimer defeated Katayoun Copeland, who was a midterm appointment replacing now-Judge Jack Whelan.

Stollsteimer, a former federal prosecutor and Philadelphia safe-schools advocate, is the son of a Ukrainian woman who immigrated to Chester with her parents after spending time in a Nazi labor camp. This background helped forge a strong sense of justice in Stollsteimer and put him on the path to public service.

“My experience in public service is that people mean to do the right thing, but they do the same thing over and over again without ever questioning whether there’s a better way to be doing it,” said 56-year-old Stollsteimer.

He added that now there is a chance “to figure out new ways of looking at everything we’re doing in county government.”

Among his priorities as the new District Attorney, Stollsteimer hopes to revert the county prison from private to public operation.
