It started out as a complaint about abandoned cars in an Upper Darby neighborhood, but turned into a referendum on the Upper Darby mayor’s fan loyalties in football, writes Isaac Avilucea for Axios.
Township resident and activist Richard Blye appeared before Upper Darby Council recently to talk to local officials about the abandoned cars.
Then, in what Blye said was a spontaneous move, he turned his energies toward Upper Darby Mayor Ed Brown, criticizing him for his loyalty to the Dallas Cowboys.
“See, this is what happens, guys, residents of Upper Darby Township, when you elect a Cowboys fan to your government,” Blye said at the meeting. “Twenty-nine years of losing with this team.”
This hit hard in a region dominated by Philadelphia Eagles fans.
And Blye continued.
“What do you expect with the leadership? This is a Cowboys fan. This guy follows the Cowboys. You see what type of leadership they have, and that’s what you put your trust in. A Cowboys fan. Sickening.”
The moment grew new legs when it was picked up by Barstool Sports.
A spokesperson for Mayor Brown declined comment.
