Wawa has broken ground on a new store in Vienna, Virginia as it embarks on a 40-store expansion plan in Northern Virginia over the next 15 years, at a cost of $240 million, writes Katishi Maake for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The Vienna store, scheduled to open in April scheduled to open in April at 465 Maple Ave., will be converted from a former 6,290-square-foot Coldwell Banker office. It will have eight Tesla charging stations outside as opposed to traditional fuel pumps.

The chain plans to break ground on three more Northern Virginia locations next year in Manassas, Sterling and Fairfax.

The 40 locations each will cost about $6 million and employ 40 people.

Wawa said it plans to open two to three locations in Northern Virginia each year, expanding on its nine currently in the region.

“We do think there’s enough brand-building opportunity and enough folks here that we’re going to accomplish that,” said Brian Schaller, chief real estate and fuel officer for Wawa.

Wawa has opened its fourth D.C. store in Adams Morgan.

The chain has more than 850 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida and D.C.
