Chester’s Medical Marijuana Grower Ready to Ship Its First Batch by End of October

Agri-Kind, a medical marijuana facility on Broomall Street in Chester, started its first plants in late July and should be ready to ship by October, writes John George for Philadelphia Business Journal.

“We expect to have our first harvest in mid-October, and we are looking to start shipping by the end of that month,” said Jon Cohn, CEO of Agri-Kind.

Agri-Kind is the Philadelphia region’s first medical marijuana grower/processor.

The facility is located along the Chester Waterfront between Talen Energy Stadium and Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino and Racetrack. It has started an expansion project early because of supply shortages statewide.

“Pittsburgh is dry right now and the Philadelphia-area dispensaries are in short supply,” Cohn said.

The company hoped to open for business in February but encountered delays. Local zoning approval took longer than expected. A condemned city highway department garage with asbestos had to be torn down. The company also had to replace its initial construction manager.

The medical marijuana facility has 20 employees and  is expected to grow to about 85 when the complex is fully operational. The jobs being created include growers, trimmers, extractors, chemists, compliance staff and security.
