A popular Delaware County watering hole celebrates its 45th anniversary this weekend, Jan. 24 to 26.  The bar has a unique and poignant origin story, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

Bill McGlone Sr.’s son Jack was an avid Philadelphia Flyers fan.  He had purchased two season tickets and was trying to convince his father that ice hockey would catch on in popularity.

Tragically, Jack was killed in a car accident May 19, 1973. Owner Bill lost all interest in his bar in Eddystone, and was thinking of selling.

Then, on the first anniversary of Jack’s death,  May 19 1974, the Flyers won their first Stanley Cup Championship.

Bill was convinced this had to be an omen. He purchased a bar in Springfield on June 20 1975, naming it the ‘Stanley Kup Inn.’

That same year the ‘Flyers’ gave the bar a house warming gift by winning the Cup a second time.

Bill Sr. passed away in 2007. Bill Jr. continues to run their family business.

This year the bar is celebrating its 45th Anniversary from Jan. 24-26.
