Langguth’s Gift Shop, a 58-year legacy on East Hinkley Avenue in Ridley Township, is closing Sept. 28, another victim to changing times, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.

Founded by Larry Langguth in 1961, the store flourished in the borough’s business district for six decades.

The store had novelties, candy, cards, lotto tickets country-style décor, holiday merchandise, jewelry, Delco-centric T-shirts, candles, scarves, purses and giftware.

Hundreds worked there . Thousands shopped there. But now technology and other changes have affected its business.

“Keeping a card and gift shop running, in a small town like this, is difficult to do,” Joanne Langguth said. People are ordering online and using Amazon. Few are shopping in neighborhood stores for gifts anymore.”

Langguth’s carried Byer’s Choice, Annalee dolls, TY plush toys and other collectibles.

Collectors are downsizing, no one buys greeting cards, candle sales are down because of the smoke, candy sales are down due to health concerns and lottery tickets are sold everywhere.

The closure is bittersweet for the family and their longtime employees, some who have been there for 34 years.

“We are all as close as family,” Joanne said of her close-knit store team.
