Radnor Man’s Cancer Fundraising Bike Ride Is Also a Spiritual Journey

By

This is the fifth year that Michael McIntyre, 68, of Radnor has been riding to raise money for the Great Cycle Challenge USA to fight childhood cancer, writes Linda Stein for mainlinemedianews.com.

“My father-in-law had a five year bout with liver cancer and died in his early 50s,” he said. McIntyre  dedicated his first ride to him.

This year, McIntyre plans to ride 500 miles in June and raise $5,000 for the charity.

McIntyre, who is president and CEO of the software company AcademyOne Inc., thought about doing the charity ride after meeting Dick Brant of Newtown Square at the gym.  Brant lost his daughter, Katie, to cancer. She was in her early 20s.

“It’s really been rewarding to see the number of people who have been supporting my rides,” he said.  “Cancer is ubiquitous. Cancer is everywhere. Almost everyone has been touched by it, either directly themselves or a loved one. It resonates.”

He dedicates each ride to the person’s spirit who had died. “I put their picture in my pocket,” he said. It becomes more than just raising money. “It’s riding as a memorial for a person who lost that battle in cancer.”
