Fans representing nations from all over the world gathered at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester last weekend to see which soccer team would take home the Philadelphia Unity Cup, writes Trish Hartman for 6ABC.

“I just think it’s a great event,” said Jason Walker. “Philly’s a big town for sports.”

This was the third year that local players representing various immigrant communities participated in the tournament initiated by the City of Philadelphia. For the event, 52 teams proudly presented their flags during the parade of nations.

The teams that advanced to the final were Liberia and Ivory Coast, both of which were well represented by fans.

Liberia emerged as the winner in overtime, taking the crown for the second year in a row. However, fans emphasized that the primary goal of the event is to showcase the diversity of the area, and winning comes second to that.

“I love the diversity,” said Mbizo Mzamane of West Philadelphia. “I love the fact that it’s a reflection of multitudes of people that exist within American society and in Philadelphia society.”
