Walnut Street Theatre’s Independence Studio has opened the season with a one-man show, entitled In Between and written and performed by Media’s Ibrahim Miari, writes Ruth Rovner for the Daily Local News.

The production is an autobiographical account of the writer’s experiences with dual identity, the result of growing up in Israel as the son of a Jewish mother and Muslim father.

The play was envisioned nine years ago while Miari was earning his master’s degree in theater education at Boston University. His thesis project focused on a solo theater piece revolving around his half-Jewish, half-Muslim identity.

“I always wanted to give voice to that identity,” said Miari, “what it’s like to be someone who grew up in both cultures and religions.”

In addition to playing himself, Miari takes on other roles, including his parents, a school principal in Israel, and a security guard in Israel who interrogates him relentlessly.

Since the play was finalized, Miari has been performing it for varied audiences, from universities to international festivals.
