Earnie Stewart, the Philadelphia Union’s sporting director, has been appointed to the newly created position of general manger of the U.S. Men’s National Team by the U.S. Soccer Federation, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Stewart has three decades of experience as a player and in technical roles for clubs in the Netherlands and U.S. He will start Aug. 1.
“We have a tremendous amount of young talent and passion in the U.S., and I’m ready to jump in, hire a new head coach, and build a culture of success, with the ultimate goal of the U.S. Men’s National Team becoming world champion,” said Stewart.

Stewart joined the Union in October 2015 as sporting director. Following the news of the new appointment, Union owner Jay Sugarman sent a letter to the team’s supporters congratulating Stewart on the new job and expressing confidence in the team’s plan for the future.
“When we set out to define our youth development strategy, one of the tenets of that plan was the belief that we could help develop world-class talent here in Philadelphia,” he wrote.
