Broomall resident Saul Robbins, a legend in the consumer electronics industry who founded the Philadelphia area’s HiFi House, has died at the age of 89, writes Rob Stott for Dealerscope.

Robbins – the father of Jon Robbins, the Executive Director of the Home Technology Specialists of America – started selling stereophonic electronic components from his father-in-law’s haberdashery in Wayne in 1955. The business later became a retail empire in consumer electronics and spanned 13 stores in southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and southern New Jersey.

When it was founded, the HiFi House was at the forefront of an industry being built from the ground by entrepreneurs and consumer tech enthusiasts.

Robbins initially focused on premier brands that were not widely distributed, such as Harman Kardon and Bose. He had a good instinct for getting ahead of tech trends and understanding the direction the industry was headed. This prompted him to expand into video, while many in the industry still focused solely on audio.
