Shoppers Turn Out in Media Borough for Small Business Saturday

Shoppers packed stores in Media Borough Saturday for Small Business Saturday.

It was busy in Media Borough the Saturday after Thanksgiving as shoppers rushed out to support local businesses.

Small Business Saturday was started by American Express in 2010 to drive consumers to small and local businesses after Black Friday, reports Beccah Hendrickson for 6abc.

Drew Arata, owner of Earth and State in Media Borough, couldn’t be happier with the new tradition.

“It’s been the biggest Saturday and the kickoff to the season every year and it reminds everybody to shop small,” he said.

His State Street business has been around for 22 years, part of a core of 10 to 15 businesses that make Media a great shopping destination, he said.

There’s also plenty to eat in the borough.

Troy Eap and his wife welcomed in the lunch rush at Artisan Croissanterie.

“For the customers, they get unique stuff they can’t find at big box stores and it helps us because they can’t find most of the products we have anywhere else,” he said.

In 2023, consumers spent $17 billion nationwide on Small Business Saturday, according to American Express.

Media continued in the holiday spirit Sunday with a Santa Parade, a block party, and a fun run.
