Colleen and Collin Whelan’s homecoming included the renovation of their 1905 home in the North Wayne Historic District, writes Sally Downey for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The pair both grew up in Wayne and met while at Radnor High School. After marrying 10 years ago, they relocated to Philadelphia with plans to return home sometime in the future.

Once their first daughter, Aislyn, was born, they started searching for a house back home and settled on a house designed by L.V. Boyd at the beginning of the 20th century.

The three-story, gambrel-roofed home attracted the pair with its bay window and columned porch, but the kitchen was too small.

“The refrigerator stuck,” said Colleen. “There wasn’t even space for a microwave.”

The upstairs bedrooms were also tiny, and the top level did not have a bath.

The pair set out on a five-month renovation adventure in January. Collin, who works for MLP Ventures, was his own general contractor, while Colleen, a vendor representative to QVC, was the interior designer.

Now, the much-bigger kitchen has Amish-crafted Kingwood cabinetry, the second floor has a master bedroom and bath, and the third floor features an office and playroom.
