Two CPA Firms in Delco Merge to Fend Off Bigger Competition

Two local CPA firms are teaming up to write off the threat of bigger, out-of-town competition in an increasingly crowded accounting marketplace.
Steger Gowie & Co. of Chadds Ford and Merves Amon & Barsz of Media have agreed to a merger that will bring together all of their 35 employees as the new Barsz Gowie Amon & Fultz CPA firm, according to a Philadelphia Business Journal report by Jeff Blumenthal.

“We’re looking at it as a way to compete with bigger firms,” said William Gowie. “There are a lot of firms coming into this area, and some local businesses are not happy. That opens up some opportunities for us, and we now have a larger firm with more services to offer.”
Prompted by the looming retirements of both Eugene Steger and Stephen Merves, the merger makes for a complementary mix of Steger Gowie’s distinctive tax planning and Merves Amon & Barsz’s audit specialty. The combined CPA will have its headquarters in Chadds Ford with offices in Media, Malvern, and Lancaster.
“The purpose of this is to become a stronger competitor that can better serve our clients,” said Peter Barsz. “It’s going to help us add more clients, but I think we can also combine our efforts recruiting.”
