The William Penn School District is receiving a $1 million Ready to Learn Block Grant that will be used to maintain or expand the district’s academic programs.

The grant was announced through a press release from the state House Democratic Communications Office.

The grant can be used for children in Pre-K to third grade to align the district with current academic standards in Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Education website.

Money can go toward teacher training to improve early literacy and STEM education, open up additional classroom instruction, maintain a quality pre-kindergarten and kindergarten program, help with Keystone Exams, and maintain math and literacy teacher coaching programs, among other things.

“This grant money will help level the playing field, giving the children of Delaware County the chance at an education they deserve,” said State Rep. Margo Davidson, chairman of the Pennsylvania House Democratic Southeast Delegation.

The Delegation’s state representatives pointed out that unfair, inequitable funding has had a large impact on the students of William Penn, so grants like Ready to Learn help bridge the gap.

State Sen. Anthony H. Williams said the grant “provides the district with the resources it needs to better prepare children for college and careers.”’
