Breaking the cycle of poverty requires both hard work and innovative approaches, both of which are exemplified by the longstanding partnership between the Community Action Agency of Delaware County and Boeing, writes Edward T. Coleman for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The CAADC and Boeing have been working together for two decades, not only helping people meet their immediate needs, but also findings ways for them to become self-sufficient.
Boeing, Delaware County’s largest employer, has ensured a roof over the heads of many who were in dire need by supporting the CAADC’s shelter for homeless individuals and families. The company has also helped establish financial literacy and youth job training programs.
Participants attend workshops and classes that help them hone their resume writing and interviewing skills. They are also taught good work practices, together with basic financial literacy. The youths are then paired up with project coordinators who serve as their mentors while they seek employment.
The partnership does not end there, as Boeing employees also donate their time volunteering with the CAADC. Most recently, this joint effort renovated the CAADC’s emergency housing facilities.
