Started in Havertown by Margit Novack of Moving Solutions in 2002, the National Association of Senior Move Managers has seen significant growth over the last several years as baby boomers approach their 70s, writes Diane Mastrull for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Demographics point to a bright future in the field of home-downsizing consultants, according to the NASMM. By 2030, one-fifth of the U.S. population will be the elderly, with those 85 and older becoming the fastest-growing segment.

Jennifer Pickett, NASMM’s associate executive director said that this year marked an important milestone, as the first baby boomers are starting to turn 70.

“This is the first generation that has outsourced everything: yard servicing, laundry, housecleaning,” said Pickett. “They’ve used wedding planners for their children. It’s not out of their realm of expectation to outsource this.”

The Association, which today is based in Illinois, had 22 members when it was established 14 years ago in Delaware County. The number has since ballooned to nearly 1,000 members as experienced consultants can earn around $200,000 a year.

The usual fee for this service is $40-$60 an hour, and it usually takes 20 to 25 hours to plan, pack, dispose of extra possessions, and make a 2,500-square-foot home ready for movers. The actual move by the moving company is not counted in those hours.
