In an age of Amazon, of big-box behemoths and, soon, of drones that will plop packages, stork-like, on doorsteps, Philadelphia Magazine compiled a list of the best independent boutiques that are redefining the shopping experience.

Ella’s Grove in Haverford was one of the 50 shops recognized.

The best stores are breathing new life into our neighborhoods and changing the way we spend our money, writes Emily Goulet.

According to Goulet, in this era of faceless online ordering, the theater of retail can intrigue us, transport us, make us want to stay for a while.

Located at 385 Lancaster Avenue, Ella’s Grove emits “a vibe of feminine rusticity with its slatted wood wall, scattered antlers, weathered vintage fixtures, and the requisite amount of fringe, suede, and denim,” writes Goulet.

Owner Fran D’Ambrosio brings a rich love of design and a passion for beauty. For almost 30 years, she has played many roles in the world of fashion, most notably as proprietor of acclaimed boutiques in both Connecticut and The Hamptons.

D’Ambrosio’s most recent stint, as the Women’s Contemporary buyer for Boyd’s, gave her a unique insight into the woman she imagines shopping at Ella’s Grove – sophisticated yet spunky, innovative, and creative. Always known for her unique flair for finding just the right look for each of her clients, Fran’s Southern warmth and charm will draw you into the ever-changing world of Ella’s Grove.

Eaves, Valley Forge Flowers, and Waltzing Matilda in Wayne also made the list.

Eaves is a women’s clothing and accessory store, Valley Forge Flowers boasts two buildings for gift-hunters, and Waltzing Matilda sells authentic, handmade leather goods constructed in the U.S. using the finest locally sourced materials.
