ChristianaCare’s new micro-hospital in Aston opened its doors this week, marking a significant milestone for Delaware County residents still reeling from Crozer Health’s recent closures, reports Sarah Gantz for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The facility, located at 700 Turner Industrial Way, is built for around-the-clock care. Its 24/7 emergency department features 10 treatment beds and is projected to serve roughly 15,000 patients each year.
Designed as a neighborhood hospital, it offers emergency care, diagnostic services, and short-term inpatient treatment, with the ability to stabilize and transfer patients who need more specialized attention.
The $50.9 million investment couldn’t come at a more critical time.
The closure of Crozer-Chester Medical Center, just a few miles away and once home to Delaware County’s busiest emergency department, left a significant void in local healthcare. Nearby facilities like Riddle Hospital and Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital have been absorbing the overflow ever since.
ChristianaCare’s Aston campus is designed to help close that gap.
About 75 employees staff the facility, and in a meaningful nod to continuity, roughly three-quarters of them are former Crozer workers.
A second-floor health center offering primary care, cardiology, imaging, and additional specialty services is set to follow later this fall.
