Swarthmore College’s New Program Could Mean Free Tuition for Thousands of Families

A Delaware County college just made a major move to take cost off the table for thousands of families, reports Michael Tanenbaum for PhillyVoice

Swarthmore College announced Monday that starting in fall 2027, it will cover full tuition for students from families earning less than $200,000 a year, a significant commitment from one of the country’s most prestigious liberal arts institutions.

The initiative, called the Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee, is designed to signal to families that a Swarthmore education may be more within reach than they think.

For the 2026-27 academic year, Swarthmore’s total cost of attendance tops $95,000, with tuition alone exceeding $72,000. Those numbers can stop families from even applying, and that’s exactly what the college says it wants to change.

“We hope it communicates to families that their financial circumstances are not a barrier to a transformational liberal arts education at Swarthmore,” said President Valerie Smith

Under the program, eligible students could receive aid packages covering their full tuition bill, though room, board, and other expenses would still apply.

Families earning above $200,000 aren’t automatically excluded either; factors like the number of children in college and regional cost-of-living differences could still qualify them for aid.

The college already provides financial aid to more than 55 percent of its students, with average packages totaling around $75,000 annually.

Its financial aid budget is expected to reach $71 million in the coming academic year, fully funded through the college’s endowment, and the school says its aid process and methodology will remain unchanged when the guarantee launches.
