The PGA Championship starts in a month, and a two-year plan to bring it to the Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square is nearly complete, writes Isaac Avilucea for Axios.
There’s been constant activity at the club in recent weeks as it prepares to welcome more than 200,000 fans for the May 11-17 event.
The course itself has been altered to make it more challenging for the pros who can drive the ball great distances.
Hospitality tents and pop-ups are going up.
Those tents, by the way, are fully carpeted with glass walls, requiring 100-plus construction workers.
The goal was to make the PGA Championship a “must-attend event,” championship director Jackie Endsley tells Axios.
“It’s a beautiful piece of property,” said PGA Championship operations manager Tyler Curtis. “There’s not a bad seat in the house out here.”
PGA has nine grandstands and four double-decker tents to accommodate the crowds scattered throughout the course, especially at the final two holes.
The PGA Shop, across from the 18th hole, will be a central hub, with a 50,000 square-foot store and 20 merchandise vendors. Surrounding it is a massive leaderboard, markets, and pop-ups, with spots to get wine and beer.
