Bala Cynwyd’s City Avenue Transformation Continues with The Blayr

The Blayr opens in Bala Cynwyd with 217 apartments and retail space, signaling continued growth along City Avenue’s evolving corridor.

The Blayr, a 217-unit apartment building at the former Lord & Taylor location, has officially opened, bringing new residents and retail space to Bala Cynwyd, according to Denali Sagner for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Federal Realty project adds not only housing but nearly 19,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. Amenities include a pool, golf simulator, and work-from-home suites, designed to attract a mix of young professionals, couples, and downsizing residents.

The project reflects a broader shift along City Avenue, which has steadily evolved from a car-focused retail strip into a more walkable, mixed-use destination. Local officials say the redevelopment aligns with a long-term vision set in motion more than a decade ago to bring residential, retail, and office space closer together.

The Blayr also replaces what had become an empty anchor site after Lord & Taylor closed in 2021, turning a once underutilized property into a centerpiece for the area’s future. Additional residential and mixed-use developments are already underway nearby, continuing the corridor’s momentum.

While traffic and infrastructure improvements remain part of the long-term equation, local leaders see projects like The Blayr as key steps toward a more vibrant City Avenue.
