Pennsylvania’s richest man, Jeff Yass, backs a plan to revitalize much of Gladwyne’s downtown, writes Denali Sagner for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The proposal was unveiled last week during a packed public meeting, marking the first time details of the long-rumored project were shared with the community.
The plan is being led by Haldon House, working alongside Yass and his wife, Janine, who have spent more than $15 million acquiring several properties around the intersection of Youngs Ford and Righters Mill roads. Developers emphasized that the vision focuses on preserving Gladwyne’s historic character while introducing new green space, improving walkability, and attracting small, locally focused businesses.
The proposal rules out residential construction, national chains, and large-scale buildings, instead highlighting independent retailers such as bakeries, ice cream shops, and boutique fitness studios that fit the village’s character.
The announcement follows months of speculation after businesses including OMG Hair Salon and Gladwyne Market closed. While some attendees praised the vision as a long-overdue revitalization, others questioned the lack of a clear financial motive behind the investment.
Yass, founder of Bala Cynwyd–based Susquehanna International Group, and the Haldon House team described the effort as both an investment and a philanthropic commitment to a community they’ve long called home.
