There are three staples of the Philadelphia diet—cheesesteaks, soft pretzels and Tastykakes (four, if you want to throw in a hoagie).
Cheesesteaks get all the attention, but pretzel connoisseurs will speak just as enthusiastic about the perfect soft pretzel, writes Maddy Sweitzer-Lamme for Philadelphia Magazine.
Straight from a vendor is still probably the most authentic, but here in Delaware County, we’re not about to settle for second best.
Here’s three places that will fix your soft pretzel voglia:
Bernie’s Pretzel’s, Aldan
Once a part of the Bazaar of All Nations in Clifton Heights, Bernie’s Pretzel Bakery is well known for its hot and fresh pretzels. Kids can watch the bakers hand-twist the pretzels.
Philly Pretzel Factory, multiple locations
This successful chain has done a decent job of recreating the pretzels you grew up with in the Philadelphia area; at games, birthday parties and barbecues. When you have to have a soft pretzel, this is a reliable place to stop.
Wawa, multiple locations
Sometimes convenience is everything. Fortunately, there’s a Wawa on every corner. It’s a good, quick option day or night, though the debate over the legitimacy of the Wawa pretzel rages on.
