Once a year at the start of Mardi Gras, a house in Drexel Hill is transported to New Orleans, reports Bob Kelly for Fox 29.
Homeowner Paula has been throwing a massive Mardi Gras celebration for about five years,
With decorations inside and out, Paula has become known in the Drexel Hill neighborhood as the Mardi Gras lady.
This year, she hosted a breakfast party to kick off the day, followed by a party in the evening that featured New Orleans’ favorite dishes.
“Who needs to go to New Orleans? You can just come to Drexel Hill,” Bob said as he greeted Paula.
The idea for the Mardi Gras party started during the pandemic.
“We were all trapped and bored, and so my neighbor, Keisha, and I, we threw some beads in the trees, and that’s where it started,” Paula said.
Next year, they added a house float.
“And every year it gets bigger,” she said.
The party includes Beignets made with a recipe from Café Du Monde in New Orleans, and the traditional King Cake, with the figurine baby inside, purchased from Randazzo’s, also in New Orleans.
