A ceremonial groundbreaking on Friday kicked off construction of a new $47 million school building for Elwyn on its main campus in Middletown Township, writes Alex Rose for the Daily Times.
The new school continues Elwyn’s 173-year-old mission to make life better for people with developmental and behavioral health challenges.
“It will expand our capacity, strengthen specialized services, and allow us to meet students where they are while helping them imagine where they could go,” said Elwyn President and CEO Chuck McLister.
The new school is part of a 10-year, $100 million master plan created by Elwyn.
It has two curriculum tracks: one for those with complex behavioral needs who need to move into Elwyn’s residential program, and another for more independent individuals who can live on their own as adults.
Other campus additions and upgrades include a transition center for students ages 18 to 21 to learn the basics of self-reliance and a young adult residential treatment facility.
At the same time, Elwyn is divesting other properties no longer in line with its mission.
The school should be ready for students by the fall of 2027.
