The owner of Carl’s Cards & Collectibles in Havertown is being remembered this week, writes Alexandra Simon for CBS News Philadelphia.
Carl Henderson, who opened the popular sports memorabilia and novelty shop 32 years ago, has died, according to an announcement posted Saturday on social media.
“Our hearts are literally broken. We have no words. We are devastated to announce the passing of our favorite person,” the post, signed by his family, said. “Carl was the best person we knew and then some, with a love for Philly Sports that was infectious, and a love for his store that was unmatched. This doesn’t feel real, and we are taking each minute as it comes.”
Henderson has described his business as a “true mom-and-pop store.”
“This is like Cheers here, without the alcohol. It’s a sports haven,” he told the Daily Times in an Oct. 26, 2022, article.
Carl’s Cards & Collectibles, located at 22 W. Eagle Road, often hosted local sports celebrities for autograph sessions and meet and greets. That included Phillies pitcher Zach Wheeler and Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, as well as Matt Stairs.
Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham visited the store in February 2025 to sign autographs, fresh off his Super Bowl LIX victory.
