Amazon’s announcement last month that it was closing all of its physical Amazon Fresh stores has stirred the emotions in some shoppers as they search for an alternative, writes Erin McCarthy for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
In the Philadelphia area, six Amazon Fresh locations closed, with nearly 1,000 workers laid off. That includes an Amazon Fresh store in Broomall.
Andrea “Andy” Furlani, of Newtown Square, was “very loyal” to the Broomall store.
“It was small, well-stocked,” said 43-year-old Furlani. “I don’t like to go into like a Giant and have a billion options. Sometimes less is more. And the staff was awesome,” she said.
“Time is valuable to me,” Furlani said. At Amazon Fresh, “you could get in and out of there quickly.”
Susan and Michael Kitt, of Newtown Square, who are actually Giant customers, hit up the Broomall Amazon store for cheaper distilled water and Amy’s frozen dinners
Nicoletta O’Rangers liked the organic selection sold at a quarter of the price that Acme or Giant charged.
“They were like the same things that were in Whole Foods but cheaper than Whole Foods.”
She paused, then added: “Maybe that’s why they didn’t last.”
