Radnor to Acquire 14 Acres at Valley Forge Military Academy

The Valley Forge Public Service Academy has temporarily withdrawn its application to open a school at Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne.

The Radnor Township Board of Commissioners plans to acquire 14 acres of land owned by  Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne to limit development there, writes Frank Kummer for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Academy is closing this year. The property covers 70 acres.

The Board unanimously approved a motion Monday night to begin eminent domain procedures, with a goal of preventing more development in the area around North Wayne.

Commissioner Jack Larkin said that a number of developments in that area have caused concern about overdevelopment and increased traffic.

“We would need to get this started, to ideally negotiate in good faith, a friendly arrangement, which we started to do,” Larkin said. “And we just haven’t really heard anything back from the school.”

The use of eminent domain, he said, will “make sure that we’ve got access to that open space for years to come.”

The academy announced in September that it planned to close at the end of the 2025-26 academic year due to declining enrollment and financial challenges. The military college would continue to operate on campus.

In December, Eastern University agreed to buy nearly half of the Academy property.
