Valley Forge Military College Pushes Back on Eminent Domain Idea

Valley Forge Military College is concerned about an eminent domain by Radnor Township commissioners for 17 acres of college property.

A decision by the Radnor Township Board of Commissioners to seize 17 acres of the Valley Forge military school campus in Wayne is not sitting well with the foundation that oversees Valley Forge Military College, writes Ryan Mulligan for Philadelphia Business Journal.

“Now I know how Greenland feels,” said Valley Forge Military Academy Foundation Chairman John English. “They think that the property is for sale. It’s not listed anywhere. We have not put the property up for sale.”

Valley Forge Military Academy is closing at the end of the school year, but the private two-year military college, serving 100 cadets, is staying open.

The land Radnor is seeking is occupied by the college’s barracks, fitness facilities, a dining hall, and a health center.

A vote on an ordinance authorizing an eminent domain acquisition is scheduled for March.

English said the seizure would prevent the college from operating.

The foundation has received a $20 million offer from Media-based Rockwell Development for the land Radnor is considering.

Radnor wants the land so it can prevent development at the property.

English is set to meet with Radnor officials Feb. 20 when they will tour the campus.
