Guru’s Indian Cuisine in Newtown Township has closed, giving chef Ashni Kumar time to prioritize his health following a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis, writes Michele Haddon for the Bucks County Courier Times.
Priya Guru, owner of the popular Indian restaurant, and Kumar had recently finalized the adoption of their two daughters and welcomed them home to Bucks County. It appeared that everything was falling into place until a Jan. 9 call from Kumar’s doctor.
Despite the restaurant’s strong following, the pair chose to close and sell the building, with plans to reopen once Kumar’s symptoms have been managed. Although the disease is incurable, treatment may take between six months and a year to achieve stability.
While the restaurant remains closed, Guru is still cooking and giving back, asking for nothing more than a prayer for her family or support for the family nonprofit, Guru’s Guardian Angels, focused on rescuing and improving the lives of stray animals.
“Guru’s is not about just being an Indian restaurant,” said Guru. “It’s not just about the dining or making money. Slowly through the years it became a healing point for me and for a lot of others.”
