A woman has stepped up with her own money to open a facility in Upper Darby for foster teens, writes TaRhonda Thomas for 6abc.
Marie Minor, CEO of Cater 2 You, is opening a luxury shelter, the Youth Haven and Emergency Residential Care Facility.
The teens will find fluffy pillows, golden fixtures, and chandeliers, more like the environment of a luxury hotel.
“The concept of the design is when you walk through the door, kids will not feel like they’re walking into a shelter,” said Minor.
The new facility, which will begin taking in residents soon, will serve 67 counties in Pennsylvania.
It’s Minor’s lifelong dream. The former foster parent wanted something special for girls who have gone through the courts and are in foster care.
The emergency care facility can house 11 girls ages 13 to 21, for up to six months, with an emphasis on self-care that includes “self-care suites” for activities like yoga, or to house a hair or nail salon.
The idea is to restore dignity and to make sure the residents feel loved.
Cater 2 You will also connect the girls to resources for long-term housing and care.
