Family Homeless Shelter in Brookhaven Closing by End of June

St. Joseph’s Family Hope Center at Our Lady of Charity Catholic Church in the 200 block of Upland Road in Brookhaven is closing at the end of June.

A homeless shelter in Brookhaven set up for families is closing by the end of June, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

The Saint Joseph’s Family Hope Center in Brookhaven Borough is one of only two shelters in Delaware County that are designed to take in entire families.

The closure will impact struggling families, said shelter President Rob Jordan.

“We’re hearing that people might have to go on the street, live in cars,” he said. “It’s rough.”

Brookhaven purchased the property for open space, and in February 2024, it appeared that the shelter would be allowed to remain.

More recently, a majority of the borough council had concluded the shelter would be a tax burden for Brookhaven because the borough would lose tax-exempt status for that part of the property where the shelter is located, paying much more in taxes than it would collect in rent.

In May, the shelter was told to leave by Sept. 30 and told to stop taking in mothers and children.

It opted to close at the end of June since it would no longer be able to take in families.
