Past Art Comrades Meet Again After 25 Years, Co-Teach Media Class

Helen Smith, (seated, in red) works on art projects with residents of Rose Tree Place along with Marsha McGlinchey (standing).

Twenty-five years ago, Rose Tree Place resident Marsha McGlinchey taught an art class at a community arts center. That’s when she met Helen Smith, inspiring her to start her own art career.

Now McGlinchey and Smith, who is an activities assistant at Rose Tree Place, are working together teaching a monthly art class at the senior living community in Media, writes Tamala Edwards and Steph Walton for 6abc.

Smith recalled their first time meeting.

She had taken her children to the community arts center to expose them to art. McGlinchey followed by offering a class on mosaics for women at Smith’s home.

Their meeting had a profound impact on Smith.

“I had gone to art school, I didn’t finish, and I always kind of felt bad about the whole thing,” she says.

McGlinchey, who has also worked as an art therapist, offered encouragement, “and from that point on, I did call myself an artist, Smith said. “She really changed my life.”

They eventually teamed up to teach small art classes.

Now they’re happy to have the opportunity to both pay it forward.

“It’s really fun to see people blossom,” says McGlinchey.
