Nature and history meet in Chadds Ford, writes Arpita Adhya for Islands.
This Brandywine Valley suburb‘s history dates back to the Revolutionary War.
The township was the site of the 1777 Battle of Brandywine. It became an industrial center in the 1800s with mills producing gunpowder and paper. Scenic railroads cropped up to transport goods and summer tourists.
A century later, the Wyeth family settled there, creating their artistic legacy.
The history of Chadds Ford and the contributions of the Wyeth artists are all on display at the Brandywine Museum of Art.
For a short Chadds Ford getaway, try the Brandywine Valley National Scenic Byway that takes you through rolling hills and green valleys.
Hiking and birdwatching are available at Brandywine Creek State Park. A more challenging two-hour hike awaits on the Mason-Dixon Trail.
There’s also nearby Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square.
