Independence Hall Closing Its Doors For Final Preparations For Nation’s 250th Anniversary

From now until January, Independence Hall is closing its doors to visitors as preservation work is completed before the nation’s anniversary.

Independence Hall will be closing its doors to visitors until January as preservation work is completed at the site of the Declaration of Independence ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary, writes Tom Dougherty for CBS News Philadelphia.

This closure will allow crews to complete their interior work in the building, which the park service says will accelerate the return of public tours. The renovations are part of the nation’s semiquincentennial preparations and follow a March executive order signed by President Trump.

“This Independence Square Improvement Project has been underway since March 2025, with rehabilitation and preservation work already concluded in both Congress Hall and Old City Hall,” said the park service. “Key elements of this project include the construction of accessible ramps; repair and restoration of wood elements, masonry, plaster, and metal finishes; and application of historically accurate paint finishes to the ceilings, walls, and trim.”

The Old City landmark is set to reopen on Jan. 28. While it remains closed, Independence National Historical Park will offer visitors other ways to explore and learn about the hall where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were signed.
