Walkable Chadds Ford Project Construction Underway This Fall

The Walkable Chadds Ford Project is creating pedestrian rails, boardwalks, and pedestrian bridges to connect Brandywine Battlefield with Chadds Ford Village.

Chadds Ford Township is looking to connect the Brandywine Battlefield with Chadds Ford Village through its Walkable Chadds Ford Project, picking up speed this fall, according to the Daily Times.

The infrastructure work will improve pedestrian safety, mobility, and access along the U.S. 1 corridor.

A pedestrian route, both safe and scenic, is being created through Chadds Ford Village in an area now divided by the heavily trafficked Route 1.

There will be new traffic improvements, new trails and sidewalks, including elevated boardwalks, pedestrian bridges, and ADA intersections, so residents and visitors can walk between Brandywine Battlefield, Turner’s Mill Park, and nearby shops, restaurants, and museums.

The hope is that better walkability will boost the local economy, create sustainable tourism, and offer a unique environment to pedestrians.

The project is expected to take 16 months and is being done by contractor Allan Myers.

Work for September included:

  • Construction of a boardwalk and two new pedestrian bridges between the township building and Creek Road;
  • Trail construction and paving prep from Creek Road to Hoffman’s Mill Road;
  • An ADA-compliant ramp installation at the Creek Road and Station Way crossing;
  • Curb and path construction, including ADA ramps, from Station Way to Hoffman’s Mill Road.
