Pedestrian Bridge to Fill Newtown Trail Gap Moves Forward With Bid Process

Plans for a pedestrian bridge over Newtown Creek advanced last week after the board of supervisors instructed its engineer to request bids for the project, writes Jeff Werner for the Patch.

The bridge will be built between North Sycamore Street in Newtown Township and Frost Lane and Edgeboro Drive in Newtown Borough as a joint project of the township, Newtown Borough, and the Newtown Creek Coalition. The route follows part of the former Newtown Trolley Line, which operated between Newtown and Doylestown from 1898 to 1923.

Measuring 170 feet in length, the bridge and its connecting pathway will extend 692 feet from Sycamore Street to Edgeboro Drive. It will be eight feet wide and made of a durable composite material with a 25 to 50-year warranty.

Fully funded by a $1 million state grant, the $750,000 bridge will help complete both the local and regional pedestrian trail network.

“The addition of a pedestrian bridge over Newtown Creek will not only bridge two municipalities together, but will improve our local and regional trail connectivity,” said State Senator Steve Santarsiero, who helped secure the Local Share Account grant with State Rep. Perry Warren.
