Like ‘Mare,’ ‘Task’ Actors Had to Learn That Crazy Delco Accent

Delaware County is once again featured in an HBO series from Brad Ingelsby, requiring the actors to turn to the same dialect coach, Susanne Sulby, who helped Kate Winslet and Jean Smith learn to speak Delco in “Mare of Easttown.”

Task’ lead Mark Ruffalo recently talked about how the “Task” cast adapted to speak that “crazy dialect” from Pennsylvania, writes Joey Nolfi for Entertainment Weekly.

Ruffalo shared Winslet’s observation that the Delco dialect is one of the “craziest” he’s worked on, but it feels “so authentic” to the new series.

Oscar-nominated Ruffalo plays a grieving priest now working as an FBI agent investigating a string of robberies with his task force.

Sulby worked with the entire cast, spending hours every day on set to help them get the accent down.

“There’s nothing like it. It’s like the north meets the south, with a mid-Atlantic, it’s the craziest dialect I’ve ever heard,” Ruffalo observes. “As soon as you get it, it feels like you’re in New York or in the south or somewhere you’re not supposed to be.”

In the end, the effort was worth it to bring authenticity to the place and setting, he said.
