Gregg MacDonald has been named interim president of Medicaid insurer AmeriHealth Caritas, headquartered in Newtown Square, writes Harold Brubaker for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
MacDonald, previously executive vice president, was promoted to his new position as CEO Kelly Munson took over as president and CEO of parent company Independence Health Group.
AmeriHealth is one of the nation’s largest Medicaid insurers. It lost members after the federal government ended pandemic-era provisions that let people stay enrolled in Medicaid even if they no longer qualified.
That change meant many insurers lost money because high-cost patients kept the coverage available to low-income people, with sicker people staying in the program.
The company had a net loss of $199 million last year, with $24.3 billion in revenue. Independence owns 61.3 percent of AmeriHealth Caritas. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan owns the rest.
“Gregg is a proven leader with the wide range of experience, commitment, and vision to guide AmeriHealth Caritas through this important transition,” Munson, who also chairs the AmeriHealth Caritas board, said in a statement.
MacDonald joined the company from Centene Corp. a little over a year ago as part of Munson’s management shake-up.
