Fifth- and eighth-graders from the St. Francis de Sales School in Philadelphia were the first to try out the Tiger Woods’ TGR Learning Lab at Cobbs Creek Golf Club that opened Tuesday, writes Michael Tanenbaum for PhillyVoice.
The students are taking science courses on food chemistry, circuitry, microbiology, rocketry, and photography.
The 30,000 square-foot lab will offer science classes and other education programs to West Philadelphia students and community members.
Starting next week, the lab will offer after-school programs for middle and high school students.
It will also host free school field trips, workshops, lunches, tutoring programs, college and career readiness programs, and other social events.
The lab is part of a $150 million restoration of the historic golf club along Lansdowne Avenue, which has a course that covers West Philadelphia and part of Upper Darby.
It has nine classrooms, music recording and podcast studios, a golf simulator, and other amenities.
“We will provide opportunities for thousands of kids to learn, grow, and chase after their dreams for many years to come,” Woods, 49, said in a statement.
Part of Tiger Woods’ contribution to the Cobbs Creek project also includes a short course for golf skills training.
