A new tradition is coming to Delaware County Sept. 28 as it embarks on its first big race, the Delco 10-Miler that starts at Rose Tree Park in Media and ends at Subaru Park in Chester.
Spots are filling up fast, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.
“We thought that this would be a great opportunity to just showcase the county,” said Diana Shacklock, director of special projects for Visit Delco.
The downhill 10-mile race is “the first of its kind in Delaware County,” Shacklock said.
The race officially starts at 8 AM.
More than 800 people have already registered. Race slots sell out at 1,000.
Organizers are keeping the numbers low this first year to make sure they can handle the logistics of the race, said Kevin Nolan, race director.
“But we expect the race to grow in years to come and be as big as some of those other races that are in the Philadelphia region.”
Proceeds benefit Delco Arts, the Delaware County Parks & Recreation Department and the HEADstrong Foundation.
Organizers are looking for volunteers to help section off roads.
Participants will get free beer, burgers, cheesesteaks and hot dogs at the finish line.
