Delaware County became part of an Army-Navy tradition this year when an annual run of the Army-Navy game ball by Navy midshipmen took them through a section of the county, writes Pete Bannon for the Daily Times.

Midshipmen transported the ball from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, to the game site, which this year is in Foxborough, Mass.

The 458-mile run included passing through Glen Mills on Route 1 Wednesday, with the midshipmen escorted locally by Radnor police.

The game is scheduled for Saturday at Gillette Stadium. The run is the longest yet in the history of the game.

“We get a lot of honkers, but I’m not sure if they knew what we are doing,” said one of the runners, Campbell Holliday of Washington, D.C., after the team of four stopped to rest in a parking lot off Sproul Road.

Dr. Maureen O’Leary offered them refreshments and the use of the restroom.

“I just love our military; this is so great,” O’Leary said.

The runners wore dog tags of members from their company who gave their lives in service to the country.

The Army marathon team will also run a game ball from West Point to the game.
