Thanks to a $1 million state grant, the Creamery of Kennett Square is preparing to add a cocktail bar and event space, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The Chester County restaurant and beer garden received the Main Street Matters grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development earlier this month. This along with an undisclosed amount of private donations, will help stabilize the rear portion of the complex, which is currently unused.
The site, built in 1902, used to house the Eastern Condensed Milk Co.
Square Roots Collective redeveloped the property in 2016 and opened the Creamery of Kennett Square as a pop-up beer garden and community gathering space. By 2018, the spot has become a permanent fixture of the community. In previous years, it also had a pop-up skating rink.
Once work is completed on the 19,000-square-foot rear building, the nonprofit will turn 7,000 square feet into an event venue and another 2,500 square feet into a cocktail bar and restaurant, Star & Lantern, which will pay homage to the history of the Underground Railroad.
