Hot summers mean more kids heading to the pool. The Nile Swim Club in Yeadon wants to make sure each of those children can swim, writes Raymond Strickland for CBS Philadelphia.
The Club has made it its mission for decades to teach children how to swim by offering free 10-day swimming lessons in the summer through its “No Child Will Drown in Our Town” program.
The program teaches kids to swim, helps them overcome their fear of water, and shows them how to stay safe in the pool.
It was Haalah Cunningham’s first time learning how to swim.
“It’s definitely important to me because most of my friends have pools and I love going over their houses like being in their pools, and if I can’t swim, I really can’t do much,” said the 11-year-old.
Teaching Haalah to swim was a summer priority for her mom.
“Making sure [my kids] are safe and able to help themselves if they ever get in trouble in the water is very important to me,” said Sanayy Miller.
Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 through 4, with rates disproportionately higher for kids of color, according to the CDC.
