Glenside artist Zenos Frudakis, best known for his Freedom monument, has sculpted everything from large-scale monuments and portrait statues to busts and figurative works throughout his distinguished career, reports Hank Flynn for FOX 29 Philadelphia.
Frudakis’ work can be found throughout Philadelphia and his work can be easily recognized for its striking detail and realism.
“I’m honored to be that well represented in my own city,” said the artist. “It’s nice to have work in Japan and other places in Europe and so on, but it’s great to have so much here.”
The Freedom sculpture is located next to the entrance of the String Theory Charter High School For the Performing Arts, on Vine Street.
“It’s a very personal piece,” said Frudakis. “The developer who was involved with the property asked me to make something of my own.”
The sculpture is 20 feet long and the work represents a figure breaking free, “maybe of mortality, of death,” said Frudakis.
“The great thing about this is, the more personal it is, the more people can relate to it, because we’re all the same down deep,” said Frudakis.
