Haverford resident Robert Engman, a renowned sculptor and professor of fine arts, has died at the age of 91, writes Bonnie Cook for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

For four decades before he retired to his workshop in Haverford in 1992, Engman was very active in the art communities of first New Haven, Conn., and later Philadelphia. He is usually associated with large, twisting sculptures, but later switched to smaller sculptures that could fit on a table.

Engman’s most famous sculpture is Triune, located at 15th Street and South Penn Square across from City Hall in Philadelphia. The 20-foot-tall piece took 18 months to create and was installed in 1975.

After that project, he switched to teaching and smaller sculptures.

“He was a frequent visiting critic at schools of art during his teaching career,” said his wife, Nancy Porter.

Two years ago, the couple – along with the help of their son Anders – published a book titled Robert Engman Sculpture: Theme and Variations.
