Springfield Lacrossse, Boys and Girls, Win 3A State Championships

Springfield lacrosse teams both took 3A Class PIAA championship wins Saturday.

Springfield boys’ and girls’ lacrosse made school history and witnessed a dream come true when both teams took PIAA state crowns Saturday.

They competed in the PIAA Class 3A championship on Saturday at Penn State, writes Sidney Snider for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The girls played against Bishop Shanahan, and the boys faced Radnor.

For the girl’s team, Springfield Cougars broke a 4-4 tie in the third quarter to win its second state championship 10-5 and its first championship in the 3A class.

The boy’s team won its first state title since 2017, knocking off four-time defending champion Radnor in a competitive 6-4 game.

The girls’ and boys’ lacrosse teams haven’t made it to the PIAA championship in the same season since 2017.

“Lacrosse is such a huge part of the community here,” said senior midfielder Maddie Kane. “Everyone knows what we’re doing, so it kind of helps bring us together.”

Team culture is what makes the team successful, the resilience and the heart, said associate girls’ coach, Sarah Damato.

On the boys’ team, most have been playing together since grade school.

“We’re best friends with each other. We’re really close, and it really helps with chemistry,” said senior attacker Patrick Flaherty.
