Meet the Man Who Helped the Eagles Master the Tush Push

The Philadelphia Eagles hired former union rugby player Richie Gray in 2023 to help the team improve its already-highly effective tush push.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ now-famous “tush push” owes some of its dominance to a name you might not know: Richie Gray.

Hired in 2023 as a team advisor, the former rugby union player brought deep expertise in body movement, leverage, and contact dynamics.

Initially tapped to help the defense counter the controversial play, Gray ended up reshaping it with the coaching staff—dissecting every detail and helping fine-tune it into the near-unstoppable force fans recognize today.

And unstoppable it is. Since 2022, the Eagles have used the tush push 122 times in short-yardage situations, turning it into 30 touchdowns and 75 first downs—with a 90% success rate.

Learn more about Richie Gray and how he helped the Eagles incorporate one of the NFL’s most unstoppable plays at The Athletic.
